Here is Friday’s pitching preview, as the Adam Wainwright ( 7-8  4.56 ERA) takes on Matt Latos (7-2  4.13 ERA) of the Cincinnati Reds.

Wainwright:  There’s really nothing discernible statistically that could point to Wainwright’s relative struggles this season.  If you’ve watched him so far this year, you’d see that he simply hasn’t had control of pitches as he has in the past, especially with his curveball.  He’s been pretty hot or cold in his starts, and in order to beat a potent Reds team, he’s gonna have to command his breaking pitches.  The more pitches Waino throws, the worse he gets, and it is thus important to hit his spots.

Latos: The Cards are catching this guy at the wrong time- hopefully the break cooled him off a little.  Before the break, in his last three starts, Latos pitched 25 of 27 innings, only allowing 2 earned runs.  That’s one of the hottest streaks by a pitcher all year.  The odds are stacked in his favor to continue his hot streak as well: Latos is 5-1 with a 3.47 ERA at home this year.

The Skinny:  The Cards are catching Latos at the wrong place and at the wrong time.  It will take not only an A+ effort from Wainwright, but an A+ effort from the rest of the guys in order to get a big W to start the second half.
