There were a lot of positives to take out of the Cardinals’ 7-0 victory over the Houston Astros tonight. However, one of these positives was more a reflection of the Cardinals’ season as a whole than just this individual game.
Take a look at the Cardinals’ side of the box score.
Six of the eight Cardinal position players on the field tonight boast batting averages of over .300, and one of the two that doesn’t–David Freese–is only slightly under, at .293, following a lengthy August slump.
Now granted, Matt Carpenter and Skip Schumaker–two of the .300-hitting players–aren’t everyday regulars. Regardless, this lineup was extremely impressive, and is a microcosm for the impressive offensive season the Cardinals are having.
Their .273 cumulative team batting average and .340 on-base percentage both lead the National League, which comes as no surprise.
Now if only the pitching staff could follow suit!
