Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners have reportedly agreed to a 7-year/$175 million contract. So, where does this leave Adam Wainwright? Well, for one, it gives him more leverage. With guys like Hernandez and Zack Greinke now making upwards of $20 million per year, that’s just undoubtedly the rate for top-flight starters. Having said that, Wainwright is also a bit older. At the end of his contract, Hernandez will be 33. Wainwright is 32. With that in mind, you still have to think Wainwright wouldn’t settle for anything less than $15 million/year. And with Chris Carpenter out now, I think there’s that much more pressure on the front office to get this extension done sooner than later. I know both sides are working towards a deal, but nothing is imminent as of yet. If John Mozeliak can get away with a deal that is no more than six years and $100 million, that would be a great deal for this team and would ensure that this franchise will have a face for the next several years.
