According to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals reliever Kyle McClellan is done for the year after a torn labrum was surgically repaired in St. Louis on Tuesday by team physician Dr. George Paletta. On the DL since May, McClellan was eyeing a return to the Major Leagues after throwing for the first time on July 3 since making 16 appearances in 2012, earning a 5.30 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. McClellan is expected to miss approximately four months. According to Jenifer Langosch, McClellan believes that his shoulder problem, which has bothered him since June 2011, led to his elbow problems.
Not that McClellan was exactly stellar at the beginning of the year, but this is obviously disappointing news for a bullpen that’s already struggling. I think it’s fair to say that the Cards will undoubtedly seek some bullpen help at the trade deadline now that McClellan is out for the season.
