Drew Silva from NBC Sports is reporting that if the Cardinals were to trade for the Tampa Bay Rays’ David Price, they would first need him to commit to a long term deal. The Cardinals want to avoid giving up their top prospects for simply a rental pitcher for the rest of the season and would rather lock up Price for years to come.

Acquiring Price would not only bolster the rotation but would also create a fearsome two-headed monster at the top of the rotation between Price and Adam Wainwright. With the Rays creeping back into wild card contention, the Cards will have to get this deal done sooner rather than later if they want Price to still be on the table.
