The National League’s 8-0 win on Tuesday night marked the last time that Cardinals’ legend Tony La Russa would manage in the big leagues. Because the Cardinals won last year’s World Series, La Russa was given the opportunity to manage the All-Star game despite his retirement. La Russa was accompanied by his good friend and former Cardinals Pitching Coach Dave Duncan who was also participating in his last game. With the win, La Russa improved to 1-2 all time in All-Star games managed.
On the field, Rafael Furcal finished 1-3 with a run scored and was the last starter removed for either team. Matt Holliday finished 1-1 with an RBI single in the 4th,which scored Furcal and pushed the NL’s lead to 6-0. David Freese had a tough at bat against Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox and finished the game 0-1.
