The Cards and Pirates fought like two of the best teams in baseball in the Cards’ 5-4 victory.
The Birds struck first with two runs in the second inning. The Pirates evened the score in the fourth and took a two run lead in the top of the fifth. Fortunately, the Cardinals matched them in the bottom half of the fifth. Martinez was replaced by Choate in the seventh.
Cardinal prospect Oscar Tavaras hit two singles before grounding into a double play in the 6th. Yadi was the only player in the lineup (aside from the pitcher) not to record a hit in the first three rounds in the order.
One fastinating performance was of Jared Hughes (Pirates reliever) who threw 92-93 mph sinkers which were, by far, his favored pitch on the night. They seemed solid- causing Kolten Wong and Tavaras a bit of trouble.
However, KWong stole the show with a walkoff homerun in the nineth. It is the first walkoff homerun of his career. That, plus a two RBI double, made him the player of the game. He caused three of the Cardinals’ five earned runs.
