In an article published in the Tampa Bay Times this morning, Marc Topkin has a small update on Lance Berkman and his plans for the 2013 season:

DH/OF Lance Berkman told the Houston Chronicle last month that the Rays were one of four teams to “kick the tires” and show interest. And it would have appeared that with the Astros signing ex-Ray Carlos Pena, it’d give Tampa Bay a better chance to pick up the six-time All-Star. But Berkman recently told Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal he isn’t even sure that he’ll play in 2013. Still one to keep an eye on.

It wouldn’t be a shock to me if Berkman retired sometime over the next few months. He has had an absolutely illustrious career and it would surprise me if he really wanted to push his health over a season that quite frankly, I do not think would do very much for him. While it is always unfortunate to end a career on an injury, that may be the path Berkman is headed on.
