Dickson Back Up, Browning Down

Preparing for the stretch run, the Cards recalled right-handed reliever Brandon Dickson from Triple-A Memphis on Friday. The move meant the end of the road for lefty Barret Browning– who had struggled of late in the Card’s pen. Browning had been disastrous in his last 5 appearances, and his ERA has climbed almost 2 full runs from 3.14 to 5.12.

It is a tough move for Browning, but Matheny said that the Cards needed “what we feel is our best” for the crucial point in the Card’s season. The move leaves only one lefty in the ‘pen for the Redbirds, Marc Rzepczynski, for the Cincinnati series– a situation that could be a concern if he struggles.

Dickson is 27 years old and threw 2 1/3 innings for the big league team earlier in the year. He is only 5-11 in Triple-A but has a 3.55 ERA and will hopefully prove to be a better option than a struggling Rzepczynski.
