The Bottom Line:
— The St. Louis Cardinals (79-70) defeated the Houston Astros (48-101) by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday night. They currently remain two games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second slot in the National League wild card spot.
— Lance Lynn gave up no earned runs over 6 1/3 innings while allowing three hits and two walks. He struck out five batters and earned his 16th win on the season.
— David Freese hit his 20th home run of the season in the second inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Yadier Molina hit his 20th home run of the season two innings later. The Cardinals now have 5 players who have hit 20+ home runs this season (Beltran, Holliday, and Craig are the other three)
Not too much to say about this one. Good solid win. Winning with the long ball is OK sometimes. Good job for Lynn. It will be interesting to see what Matheny does with him since Westbrook seems to be close to coming back to the rotation. Until tomorrow, Let’s Go Cards.
What’s Next: The Cardinals go for the sweep on Thursday afternoon against the Houston Astros, the last time the Astros will ever play in St. Louis as a National League team. First pitch is at 12:45 PM CST and can be seen on Fox Sports Midwest. As always, all pre and post game information can be found on CardsBlog.
