Game Recap: Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller gave up 7 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. Miller was taken out after the fifth and the Cards’ bullpen threw scoreless appearances thereafter. The Cardinals offense fought hard to come back from the seven run deficit. Daniel Descalso drove in Jon Jay on a single in the bottom of the fourth. Allen Craig, Matt Carpenter, and Kolten Wong all provided RBI hits in the innings that followed.
With the score 4-7 in the 9th, the Cardinals brought the tying run to the plate after an Allen Craig single and a walk. Mike Matheny decided to pinch hit Matt Adams for Peter Bourjous, but unfortunately he was unable to handle Yankee reliever David Robertson’s curveball. With two on, two outs, Roberston struck out Daniel Descalso for the final out of the game. The final score was 7-4, Yankees.
Despite their loss, it is not often that a team goes down 7-0 in the third and still has a fighting chance in the 9th. The Cards’ record changes to 29 and 24 on the season, putting them 2.5 games behind the first place Brewers.
