Game Recap: The Cardinals lost their third straight game at Busch stadium 4-9 against the Giants. Adam Wainright unfortunately did not continue his 20-scoreless-inning streak, letting up a season high of 7 runs in a season low of 4 and a half innings. The Cardinals offense was only three able to get three hits off Giants starter Madison Bumgarner, who struck out 10 in seven innings. Despite a rally in the 8th, the Cardinals were unable to make up for Wainright’s deficit.
“Tonight was just terrible, just not a good night,” Wainwright said. “It’s unfortunate to go up against a great starter like Madison [Bumgarner] that I did that and gave our team little to no chance to win that game.”
Matt Adams on DL: It was announced tonight that Cardinals’ first basemen Matt Adams will go on the disabled list with a calf strain. This comes after previous announcements by Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny explaining that the decision to sit Adams was out of caution. The injury is clearly more profound than previously anticipated.
Oscar Taveras Gets the Call: Matheny confirmed that he has called up Oscar Taveras from the minors to start in Saturday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants. This announcement came shortly after news of Adams’ enlistment on the DL. The outfielder will wear number 18, and will hopefully have a positive impact on the Cardinals’ offensive line up.
Juggling the Bench: The Cardinals have recalled rookie outfielder Randal Grichuk from Triple-A Mempis and have optioned outfielder Shane Robinson to that club. Grichuk, 22 years old, is batting .315 with 32 RBIs, and recently hit his team-leading 10th home run Thursday night. The Cardinals had originally acquired Grichuk from the Angels in the 2009 offseason.
