Today’s game will be the showdown between Matt Garza (7-7, 3.74) of the Brewers and the new Cardinal pitcher John Lackey who was acquired at the trade deadline from Boston. We play Boston Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. which could be an awkward series for Lackey who may have to pitch the latter. Either him or Masterson is likely to make that start.
Back to today’s game, Lackey has a great record against the NL: 18-10, 3.07. He has only faced the Brewers once. In 2011, Lackey threw for eight innings surrendering four runs. With the bare Cardinal offense, he will probably have to do better than that this afternoon.
The Cardinal offense has also seen much success against Garza. Peralta is 13 for 30 against him and Adams is 6 for 8. Hopefully Peralta’s spike in offensive production since the All Star Game will continue. Today’s game is extremely important.
A win tonight would make the Brewers only one game ahead of the Redbirds in the division. However: Pittsburgh sits between the two hoping, also, that the Cards win in order to take over first place by half a game.
