Coming off another Adam Wainwright shutout, the Cards are hoping to win the rubber match against the Giants today at 2:45 CST. With a win, the Cards would finish this 10-game road trip with an acceptable 5-5 record before heading home to face the Marlins.
Pitching Matchup: Carlos Martinez (1-3, 4.13 ERA) was not spectacular in his last start against the Dodgers, but he got the job done. Martinez tossed 4.1 innings and issued six hits and three walks, but he only gave up one run in earning a no decision. As a relief pitcher against San Fran this year, Martinez struggled mightily in two appearances. He threw 3.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits, and he took the loss in one of the games.
For the Giants, Madison Bumgarner (9-5, 2.90 ERA) comes in allowing four or more runs in two of his past three starts, so he could be vulnerable tonight. Additionally, he is much worse at home (4.94 ERA) than on the road (1.32 ERA). Yet, Bumgarner was sharp in his lone start against the Cards this year as he struck out ten batters in seven shutout innings. Look for Jon Jay to have a big day since he is 4 for 9 with two doubles in his career against Bumgarner.
The Skinny: If the Cards can’t solve Bumgarner, this one could turn into a blowout and a series win for the Giants. Nonetheless, the Cards are due for a big offensive performance, and they may be in luck if Bumgarner continues to pitch the way he has recently.
