Game Preview: Cards Look to Win Series Against Brewers (9/7/2014)

The Cards are hoping to widen their NL Central lead to 5 games with a win over the Brew Crew today at Miller Park.

Pitching Matchup: Cards’ ace, Adam Wainwright (16-9, 2.69), takes the mound today in pursuit of just his fifth win since the All-Star Break.  He has not shown the same dominance that he exhibited in the first half of the season, but hopes to improve on his start last week against the Pirates.  He surrendered 7 hits in that game, 3 of which were home runs, but lead the Cards to victory with 3 RBIs of his own at the dish.

Jimmy Nelson (2-6. 4.14) will pitch for the Brewers today.  He has seen his fair share of struggles this season.  Starting only 10 games this season, he has recorded a win in only two of those games.  He has an opponent batting average of .278 and a WHIP of 1.38.  Hopefully the Cards can capitalize on this rookie’s sub-par pitching.

The Skinny: Winning this series would be huge for the Cards as they want to increase their lead to secure a playoff spot soon.  They have one series remaining with the Brewers after today.  We’ll see if Wainwright can continue his dominance on the mound and his contributions at the plate.  It would be good to see Oscar Taveras continue to swing the bat well and for Matt Adams to get hot again.
