After taking the series opener in a one-run game with the Padres, the Cards look to continue gaining ground on the division-leading Brewers tonight at 7:15 CST. So far for the season-series, the Cards and Friars are tied at 2 wins apiece. However, over the past few years, the Cards have won 19 of 23 games played against the Padres at Busch Stadium.

Lance Lynn

The Pitching Matchup: In a rematch of the July 29th game at Petco Park, Lance Lynn (12-8, 2.97 ERA) looks to better the Padres’ Tyson Ross (11-10, 2.63 ERA) after falling to him before. In that late July start, Lynn gave up two runs – one earned – over 6 innings pitched but took the loss. For the course of the season, Lynn has been one of the Cards most dominant starters, posting an impressive 2.97 ERA and 123 ERA+. No Padre has more than ten at-bats against Lynn which is too small of a sample size to deduce any meaningful trends. However, Jeff Francoer is 2 for 3 with a homer and Will Veneable is 4 for 10.

Tyson Ross, the winner of that July 29th matchup, takes the mound tonight for the Padres looking to replicate his performance. Ross has been solid all year for the Padres, earning an All-Star nod and has posted a 2.1 WAR. Ross has shown signs of promise throughout his MLB career, but he has truly blossomed this year; his first as a full time starter. In that July 29 game, Ross held the Cards to just one run over 6 innings while striking out seven.

The Skinny: Both pitchers have been dominate all year long even though their win-loss totals don’t reflect that. The Cards’ bats need to come to life tonight early against the Padres’ ace if our team wants to win this rematch of the two pitchers.
