Game Preview: Shelby Miller, Cards Set to Face Joe Kelly

After last night’s thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory, the Cards look to win their fourth in a row and clinch a series win tonight against the Red Sox at 7:15 CST at Busch Stadium.

The Pitching Matchup: No doubt, this is the most intriguing aspect of tonight’s game. The pitching matchup pits two good friends and ex-teammates against each other when Shelby Miller (8-8, 4.18 ERA) faces off against Joe Kelly (2-2,4.37 ERA), who will be making his Red Sox debut on the mound, tonight on the mound.

Kelly was traded to the Red Sox just last week as part of a deal that sent John Lackey to St. Louis, so his emotions are sure to be running high. For sure, Kelly has not been the same pitcher since returning from a lengthy stint on the DL with a hamstring injury, so the Cards traded him in an attempt to win now. In four starts since coming off the DL, Kelly has conceded 16 earned runs in just 19.2 innings pitched, though he does have a .69 ERA at Busch Stadium this season.

On the other side, Miller earned a win in his last start against San Diego, as he pitched six innings and allowed two runs on only three hits, though two of those were home runs. Just like Kelly, Miller was also developed in the Cards’ farm system, so he’s sure to be battling some strong emotions tonight as well.

The Skinny: This game features two pitchers that have struggled this season, couple that with the fact that emotions will be running high, and there’s a good chance that tonight’s game will be much higher scoring than last night’s 3-2 Cards victory. Miller has pitched better as of late so the slight advantage has to go to the Cards, but Kelly’s success at Busch Stadium should make it a compelling game.
