Pitching Matchup: Adam Wainwright (19-9, 2.45 ERA) takes the mound for the Cards tonight. He’s coming off the heels of a shutout complete game and hopefully he can keep his success rolling tonight. With 19 wins on the season, Wainwright’s looking for his second 20 win season tonight while also helping the Cards get one step closer to a division title.
The Cubs are sending out starter Travis Wood (8-12, 4.86 ERA) to face off against Wainwright tonight. Wood is coming off of a solid performance in which he went 6.0 innings while only giving up 3 hits and no runs. However, this comes after a meager showing against Pittsburgh in which he only lasted 1 2/3 innings while giving up 7 earned runs. There’s no telling which of these two versions of Wood the Cards are going to see tonight, so they need to be ready to hit.
The Skinny: With the Cardinals clinching a playoff berth, they can now focus all their attention on a division title and putting as much distance between themselves and the Pirates. With Wainwright on fire lately, chances are that they are going to start this week on the right foot.
