The Bottom Line: The Cardinals beat the Royals in the third game of their four game series. Adam Wainwright went 8 innings, giving up only 4 hits and striking out 8. The bullpen blew the lead for the second night in a row when Trevor Rosenthal let up two runs in the 9th, bringing the game into extra innings. In the 11th inning, Matt Carpenter broke the 2-2 tie with a double to bring in Peter Bourjos. Carpenter finished with a career high of 5 hits, going 5 for 5 including 2 doubles and a walk.
Waino: His pitching was absolutely on point tonight. In the first five innings, he let on only one baserunner, and 12 of his first 15 outs came either via strike out or ground ball. Absolute domination. Wainwright may not light up the radar gun with his 93 mph fastball, but he will confuse the game’s greatest hitters. He has 8 wins, and, as of this game, secured his 7th start of zero runs this season — and his third shutout.
Carpenter: Remember how three weeks ago we were wondering what was wrong with Carpenter? On May 17, his batting average was .256 and slugging percentage was .315. Ever since we mentioned our concern, he’s proven that there’s nothing to worry about. A 14 game hitting streak helped improve his batting line to .307/.395. He has reached base in 10 straight plate appearances. This guy is on fire and is still the All-Star that he used to be.
“Tonight’s one of those special nights where things are falling into place,” Carpenter said. “I was seeing the ball well, and putting good swings on it, and they were able to fall into hits. Sometimes you can take the same swings and hit them right at people.”
What’s Next?: The Cardinals will face KC in the final game of their four game series tomorrow night at 7:10pm CST. Michael Wacha, who threw six scoreless innings in his previous appearance, will take the mound against Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura.
