The Bottom Line: Adam Wainwright (20-9, 2.38) gave an excellent effort tonight as he went seven innings, giving up no runs on just three hits and one walk in addition to eight strikeouts.  Five different Cards’ batters had RBI’s tonight, including John Jay who had three and Matt Adams who had two.  All of the starters had at least one hit except for Wainwright.  Randal Grichuk continues to perform at the dish with two hits.  The Cards also had four doubles.

Putting It All Together: Monday night’s game was the first time that I really felt the Cards have what it takes to compete for a World Series title this year.  Sure, it was against the terrible Cubs, but the performance from Wainwright and the Cards offense shows the threat that they can pose to opposing teams.  The combination of Wainwright and a hot-hitting Cards team is unparalleled in the league.  We saw production from all of the Cards’ starters which is a sign of good things to come.  Hopefully the Cards will stay on track to win the NL Central and get prepared for the postseason.

What’s Next?: Shelby Miller (10-9, 3.68) takes on Kyle Hendricks (7-2, 2.28) on Tuesday at Wrigley Field where the Cards look to get one step closer to clinching the NL Central.
