The Bottom Line: The Cardinals couldn’t pull out the win tonight. After a rough first inning in which David Peralta and Mark Trumbo hit back to back home runs, starter Lance Lynn (15-10, 2.73 ERA) was able to hold Arizona to 2 runs after six innings. The Cardinals were clearly outhit by the Diamondbacks, as they could only muster 2 runs the entire game. The nail in the coffin was a 3 run blast from Trumbo in the seventh, which gave the Diamondbacks the 3 run lead that they would maintain for the rest of the game.
Postseason Push: The Cardinals are lucky that the Pirates also lost tonight, otherwise they would no longer hold the top spot in the NL Central. The Cardinals are currently still up by 1.0 game. The Cardinals cannot afford to drop another game as the Pirates are not looking to blow another opportunity to leapfrog the Cardinals in the standings. While there is only one more game left, the Cardinals need to get some momentum going into the postseason, and a big win tomorrow would be just the way to do that.
