The Bottom Line: Matt Adams went 2 for 5 with 4 RBI’s and A.J. Pierzynski went 3 for 4 in his Cardinals’ debut to beat the Cubs and end a four game losing streak. Shelby Miller also tossed 5 2/3 quality innings in his return from the bullpen to the starting rotation.
Matt Adams: Where would this Cardinals’ team be without Matt Adams’ bat in the lineup? After today’s game, the big first baseman is now hitting .320 on the season with 12 homers and 47 RBI’s. Adams is also currently worth 2.6 WAR even with missing nearly a month on the DL. If this club is going to go anywhere in October, it will be on the back of Matt Adams.
A.J. Pierzynski: In his first game in a Cardinals’ uniform, Pierzynski delivered with three hits and an RBI. If Pierzynski can continue to produce anything like this first game of his, the Cardinals will be absolutely fine without Yadier Molina. While Tony Cruz has been a serviceable backup for the past couple of years, Pierzynski gives the Cardinals a truly feared bat in the order during Molina’s absence.
Shelby Miller: Despite Miller’s failure to earn a win in this game, his performance today is nothing to be ashamed of. In his first start since being relegated to the bullpen after the All-Star break, Miller only gave up three hits and two earned runs. While not commanding the sharpest stuff today, Miller did what he could and put this team in a good position to snap their losing streak.
What’s Next: Waino takes the mound tomorrow at 1:20 CST to try and take the series from the Cubs. Kyle Hendricks will be making his third career start for the Cubs.
