The Bottom Line: Justin Masterson proved me and the Cardinals’ country wrong tonight by spinning 7 innings of shutout baseball and adding an RBI to his name. Matt Adams also continued his torrid season with a 2-RBI single in the the top of the 3rd
Justin Masterson: I’ve hated on the Cards’ deadline pick-up ever since he arrived in St. Louis, but after tonight, I will be the first one to say I was wrong. Masterson was masterful for 7 innings, only giving up three hits and striking out three. While his ERA still sits at a horrid 6.00, Masterson proved tonight that he can be the help this rotation craves. Masterson was able to get his calling card sinker working tonight, inducing 13 groundball outs. If Masterson can continue to keep his sinker low, he’ll earn his keep with this club.
The righty also had a RBI single tonight to the surprise of everyone. Justin could do no wrong tonight.
Matt Carpenter: Even though he wasn’t driving in the runs, Matt Carpenter was the catalyst of the Cards’ offense tonight. The leadoff man went 3 for 5 scoring two runs. While this season has been disappointing compared to his MVP caliber 2013, Carpenter has remained an integral part of this Cardinals’ lineup. It’s a scary thought to consider where this team would be without him, Matt Adams, and Jhonny Peralta.
Oscar Taveras: The rookie made an embarrassing mistake on the basepaths tonight going first to third. Taveras probably could have scored on Jon Jay‘s double, but instead lazed his way to 3rd. It didn’t end up costing the Cardinals a run as Masterson had his aforementioned RBI single.
What’s Next: John Lackey (12-8, 3.98 ERA) takes the mound against the San Diego Padres back at Busch Stadium. The Padres bring the NL’s worst offense into St. Louis while Lackey looks to rebound after a miserable start last time out. Game time is 7:15 CST.
