Bottom Line: Carlos Martinez picked up the first Major League win of his young career giving up three runs in his five innings of work and the Cards won their second in a row to split the four game series with the Phillies. Both Johnny Peralta and Mark Ellis were able to drive in two runs in todays win and finish the ten game homestand with seven wins.
Martinez: The recent injury to Michael Wacha has left 22-year-old Carlos Martinez as the replacement starter in the Bird’s starting lineup until Wacha can return. The first inning was very solid for Martinez with it only taking 15 pitches to sit all three batters down. The second wouldn’t prove to be so easy for Martinez as he loaded the bases with a hit, a hit batter, and a walk before Cody Asche cleared the bases with a double. From that point on Martinez was solid through his final three innings of work and the Redbird’s bullpen was able to hold the Phillies scoreless for the remaining four innings.
Look Ahead: Tomorrow the Cards will kick off a ten game road trip with series against the Rockies, Dodgers, and Giants. The Birds currently sit five and a half games back of Milwaukee after their sweep of the Rockies this weekend.
