The Bottom Line: With Shelby Miller on the mound, the Cards faltered against Giancarlo Stanton and the Miami Marlins. Stanton clubbed two homers against Miller to make it 3-0 early on, but AJ Pierzynski hit an RBI knock in the fourth and then Jon Jay followed with a two-run blast, his third of the season, to tie it 3-3 in the fourth inning. The Marlins responded with two runs in their half of the inning, though, and added an insurance run that turned out to be crucial in the seventh inning, as the Cards mounted a late comeback in the ninth inning but fell short 6-5.
Stanton Crushes Miller: Stanton stung Miller with two homers, including a monster shot that he hit nearly 500 feet, and accounted for three of the Marlins’ five runs off Miller. After posting three consecutive quality starts following the All-Star break, Miller had a setback today, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and two walks in five innings of work.
