Happy Birthday to Stan Musial, 92, one of the most popular and most beloved players not only in St. Louis Cardinals history but also in the history of Major League Baseball.
I was obviously not alive, unfortunately, to see Stan The Man play. But from what my father tells me in addition to all of the countless stories I have heard over the years, he seems to have been quite the guy. My favorite stat from Musial has always been that he had 3,630 hits — 1,815 at home, 1,815 on the road. Talk about consistency. 24 All-Star selections, 3 MVPs, 7 batting titles, 475 career home runs, and a .330 lifetime batting average. Does it get any better? His number are really masterful.
I’ve been fortunate enough to attend the majority of the Cardinals home playoff games over the past couple years, and every time they wheel out Stan around the field, I get chills. He has meant so much to this organization over the years and to still see him at age 92 come out to Busch Stadium to show his love and support for the fans is something truly special.
I have yet to get to George Vescey’s biography of Musial, which I’ve heard is fantastic. I’m hoping I can get to it this off-season. In any case, Happy Birthday Stan, and thank you for all the memories you have given Cardinals fans over the years.
