Here is a really cool website that takes the salaries of MLB players and calculates how valuable they are to the team based on their contribution to the team’s overall performance. For example, Yadier Molina’s $7,000,000 salary was 6.19% of the teams payroll, but his contribution to the team (based on his WAR [Wins above replacement] percentage divided by the team’s WAR) was 17.63% of the team’s total on-field performance, leading to the obvious deduction that Molina was very valuable to the team last year. However, as his salary jumps up to $14.2 million this year, we will very likely see a drop in this calculation as his salary will be more than double that of last season.
