The Arizona Fall League named the Cardinals’ 2011 top draft pick, Kolten Wong, to their “Top Prospect” team on Monday, which is selected by managers and coaches of the AFL. Below is what the scouting report said from the AFL, per Derrick Goold’s article:
Hit .500 when ahead in the count … Rising Stars Game participant … three runs scored vs. Phoenix on 11/05 … three hits and three RBI at Salt River on 10/23 … four hits at Scottsdale on 10/16 … ranked the best second base prospect, fourth best Cardinals prospect and 49th best prospect by MLB.com … Baseball America third-team all-American, ABCA first-team all-American, Perfect Game first-team all-American team in 2008 … first-team all-WAC selection all three years at Hawaii … WAC freshman of the year in 2009.
I think Wong deserves a chance to be on the team this season. He hit .287 with 52 RBIs and 9 home runs this past season for AA-Springfield and hit .324 in the AFL. He will be invited to Spring Training this season and it will be interesting to see, considering the lack of depth the Cardinals have in their middle-infield, whether Wong is given a shot.
