The Cardinals tied the series with the Yankees 1-1 on Tuesday night, beating the Bombers 6-0 in front of another sell out crowd at Busch Stadium. Lance Lynn pitched his first complete Major League game, throwing a career-high 126 pitches.
In his post-game interview, just before taking a towel of shaving cream to the face, Lynn gave a remark regarding his celebratory embrace with catcher Yadier Molina after the final out (right) – “He knew how much it meant to me.” Adam Wainwright, who had poked fun at Lynn earlier in the season for never going the full nine innings, congratulated the 27 year old pitcher by saying, “Bout time.”
Nearly batting around the order, the Cardinals’ offense came through big in the third inning, scoring four runs. Matt Adams drove in Matt Carpenter on a ground-rule double to right-center field. Matt Holliday then scored on missed catch error by Yankees’ first basemen, Kelly Johnson. Another Yankees’ error, this time by second basemen Brian Roberts, brought in Adams and Molina to score.
An Allen Craig home run in the fifth and a homer by Holliday in the seventh brought the Cardinals’ lead to 6-0.
The Cardinals remain just 1.5 games behind the first place Brewers. St. Louis will face the Yankees in a rubber match tomorrow night.
