Matt Adams aka Big City is the Cardinals big-bodied first basemen. Born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, Adams grew up a big fan of Ken Griffey Jr. He attended Slippery Rock University where he won the D2 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Player of the Year award in 2009. Drafted in the 23rd round later that year, Adams quickly rose through the ranks of the minor leagues by way of his bat. In 2011, he was named the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year. Since breaking into the majors in 2013, Adams has struggled with injuries that have only allowed his prodigious power to show in brief flashes.

It will be exciting to see what Adams can provide this season if he remains healthy. He has seen his slugging percentage drop off over .100 points since his rookie season, but his big 6’3 260 pound frame still provides plenty of power coupled with decent contact skills. He will need to get back to these previous power levels if he hopes to earn regular playing time at first base. Despite his bulk, Adams is surprisingly nimble. He has improved upon his fielding each year in the majors, and now grades as an above average fielder. He is not a threat to steal many bases, although he is a smart base runner who understands the game.
