Don’t Forget the Victory: Yesterday was a day of roller-coaster emotions for Cards fans and Americans alike. The Cards fell down early in yesterdays game and we all began doubting Rookie Carlos Martinez’s ability when he gave up a three-run double in the second inning against the Phillies. In only his second start, we are all still unsure whether Martinez will be a viable option as a starter, although, with two of our five starters now on the DL, it may seem more likely. But both the Cards and Martinez came roaring back as he followed the second with three more scoreless innings and the Cardinals finally took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth capped of by Mark Ellis’ successful squeeze bunt to score Jon Jay from third. From then on it was smooth sailing and the perfect start to the day before USA took on Portugal in the World Cup at 5. Many of the Cards were extremely pumped for the soccer game but none were more excited than Adam Wainwright.
Wainwright and all of us USA fans experienced a second emotional ride as we watched America come back from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead before giving it up on the final play of the game to result in a tie. This was a rough day for soccer but it’s important to remember the crucial win the Redbirds picked up and that USA still has a great chance of moving on to the next round.
Invasion of the Moths: In one of the weirdest stories of the weekend, Busch Stadium was overrun by moths during Friday night’s game against the Phillies. After a 50-minute rain delay the players returned to the field only to be greeted by a swarm of moths that had descended to the field during the break. This caused problems for players for both teams as Yadi said, “It was as bad as I’ve ever had to play with with moths. It was bad.” Both sides had to deal with the problem, but apparently the Cards didn’t handle the adversity very well as they got pounded 5-1. At least if this happens again our Birds will now know how to handle the adversity. Thats all this week and I’ll see you again next week Cards Nation.
