Monday Morning Managers

5-2 For The Week: This week the Cards had yet another week full of highs and lows but at the end of it all they ended up 3 games ahead of .500, closed the gap to 1 game in the central, and finally had their bats come alive.  The Birds followed up their 9-1 thumping by the Pirates on Thursday with one of their best wins of the year in their comeback from 6 runs down to beat the first place Brewers.  I was at the game on Thursday and I am not sure when I have seen a more lackluster performance. The Birds had won their previous three and were playing great ball coming into Thursday night, but it did not carry over as they looked unable to hit, inept in the field, and they were not playing as a team.  Friday night it looked like more of the same as the Birds quickly fell behind six runs against the Brewers, but they were able to find a spark and come roaring back to win with Matt Holiday’s single shot in the top of the 9th that proved to be the difference.  From there the birds won again Saturday before getting drubbed again 11-2 yesterday.  This week was very telling as we saw what the Redbirds are capable of on offense and we saw some dominating pitching mixed in with some terrible outings.  They are capable of another deep run in September if they can find a way to isolate the good outings and recreate them while finding solutions for the terrible ones.

Coming Back from the Break: With a few days to rest, the Birds need to find a way to come out firing on all cylinders in order to take the lead in the Central.  Aside from a quick two game series against the Dodgers, the next few series should be an excellent opportunity to make progress in the Central with series against the struggling Rays, Cubs, and Padres.  The games will be crucial because the Birds need to come out of the break strong and take back their lead in the and not relinquish it again all season.  That’s all for this week and I will see you again next week Cardinal Nation.
