Game Recap: Behind a strong outing by Jaime Garcia, the Redbirds were able to finally pick up a series win in their 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday afternoon. After dropping three straight series, the Cards won the rubber match yesterday having picked up another 5-0 victory on Friday with Shelby Miller’s second career complete game shutout. Before this series with the Blue Jays, the Cards had only won three out of their last eleven games and had lost series to the Giants, Yankees, and the Royals. With the win the Birds avoided falling to .500 for the first time since May 15th and now sit at .516 with a record of 33-31. The Cards now will enjoy a day off before they travel to Tampa Bay to kick off another interleague series against the Rays on Tuesday.
Holliday Scratched From Lineup: Matt Holliday was scheduled to bat 3rd and play DH for the Cards in yesterday’s game before Mike Matheny was forced to scratch him from the lineup and replace him with Yadier Molina who was scheduled to take a second consecutive day off. Holiday seemed fine in batting practice and was hitting souvenirs to fans all over the outfield in pregame, but a spasm in his back forced him to sit the bench in Sunday’s game. Matheny had given Molina a much needed second day off to clear his head and get his mind right for the important game to come as he is on of the most important leaders on this team. Matheny emphasized this in his post game press conference saying, “He’s mentally fatigued. Not physically, but mentally fatigued from grinding.” Holliday will meet with the team medical staff today and again tomorrow in order to evaluate his progress and his ability to play against the Rays tomorrow.
Adams to get Rehab Start: Matt Adams will get a rehab start at AAA Memphis this afternoon while he is recovering from his calf strain. Adams was forced to the disabled list on May 31st after a nagging calf injury had kept him out of the lineup for a few days. With the open spot on the roster the Cards were able to call up hot prospect Oscar Taveras who is batting .212 with a HR in his rookie debut with the club. Adams will be available to the Cards once they return home on Friday against the Nationals. There is no word from Matheny on who the Birds will send back down once Adams is able to return back into the lineup.
