In his first start since landing on the disabled list in early June with a left shoulder impingement, Jaime Garcia threw 2 1/3 innings for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals. In the 4-1 victory, Garcia allowed four hits, no runs and no walks while striking out one batter.
Garcia is expected to make three Minor League starts before being promoted to the Major League level.
Garcia could very well be the “trade deadline addition” that this team needs to take their play to the next level. Earlier today, rumors surfaced that Cliff Lee is on the trading block (yes, again), but I think it is highly doubtful that the Cards try to acquire him considering starting pitching isn’t their biggest need right now and Garcia is coming back from surgery in just a couple weeks.
