Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday afternoon that left fielder Melky Cabrera will be suspended for 50 games, effective immediately, for testing positive for testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance.

Wow. Am I just being ignorant for being so shocked about this? It’s not that I necessarily ever thought “there is NO WAY Melky Cabrera is on steroids”, but I certainly thought his 2012 season was one of realizing potential, as he always showed signs in New York of being a possible legitimate All-Star. While it is certainly bad news for baseball as a whole, it is, I suppose, good news for the Cardinals. The San Francisco Giants will undoubtedly have a much more difficult time reaching the playoffs now, and I’m not providing any ground-breaking analysis by saying that I think it’s clear the Los Angeles Dodgers will win the N.L. West fairly easily with the Giants’ best hitter out of the lineup.

In 113 games, Cabrera was hitting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs.
