In his career, Jason Motte had never earned a six-out save. That changed Wednesday night. In the eighth inning, nearly 100% of his pitches were fastballs in the upper-90s and he was hitting all of his spots. He didn’t look like the closer who blew Game 2 of the World Series last year, and he certainly didn’t look like the pitcher who blew 7 saves this past season. I’ve been critical of Motte from time to time for the lack of movement on his pitches but he really look strong out there tonight.
In the ninth inning, Motte blew by the Giants’ top of the lineup and closed out game three for the Cardinals. More than ever tonight, he showed me that he deserves to be the closer of a championship ball club. After the game, Ken Rosenthal asked him if he would be ready for another two-inning save on Thursday, he said “Sure, sign me up.” Here’s to six more saves in the 2012 season. We’re halfway home boys.
