St. Louis Cardinals: Lance Lynn (12-4; 3.10 ERA)
What a great month Lance is having: 3 starts, 3 wins, 19 IP, 1 ER, & 22 SO. Lance is really hitting his stride going into the back stretch of the season, and is providing huge benefits to the Cards. Lance has faced the Cubs 3 times this year, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive: 3 wins, 19.1 IP, 2 ER, 17 SO, and 7 BB. If Lynn can continue his hot streak in July as well as his dominance of the Cubs, things look god tonight for the Redbirds.
Chicago Cubs: Travis Wood (4-5; 4.33 ERA)
It would be an understatement to say that Wood is experiencing the polar opposite of a streak from Lynn. In his last two starts, he has gone 10.2 Innings, and allowed 14 ER on almost 200 pitches, including a game against the Cardinals in which he went 6 IP and allowed 6 ER. Wood needs to find the stuff that he had i June and early July to reclaim this season. He is a young guy — just 25 — and has a boatload of potential, but I just don’t know if he is going to be able to recover from such a harsh downturn in his season. He may not be as bad as he was in his past two starts, but neither will he get back to wear he was in the widdle of the season.
THE SKINNY: Lopsided matchup here. Lynn just needs to go out there tonight and continue what he’s been doing, and let his offense do the rest.
