Pitching Preview: 8/7/12

San Francisco Giants: Barry Zito (8-8; 4.27 ERA)

After a decent stretch during the first half, Zito has not been great as of late, going 0-2 with a 7.56 ERA in his last three starts. Even worse, he is 1-6 with a 5.23 ERA in eight lifetime starts against the Cardinals.

St. Louis Cardinals: Lance Lynn  (13-4; 3.40 ERA)

While the Cards lost 8-2 in Lynn’s last start in Colorado, Lynn has been outstanding lately, posting a 2.70 ERA in his last five starts. And though he struggled in his last start against the Giants allowing five runs over 5 1/3 innings, Lynn has won four of his past five starts at home, striking out 33 batters in 30 1/3 innings.

THE SKINNY: The Cards have won 12 of their last 13 games at Busch Stadium while averaging six runs per game during that stretch. They clearly feel more comfortable at home and are able to adjust to the severe heat a lot more than some other teams. Considering Zito’s stats against the Cardinals, his recent performance, and the Redbirds’ success as of late, I fully expect the Cards to come out swinging tonight and put up a lot of runs on the board.
