Pitching Matchup: For those who enjoy nothing more than a good pitching duel, this will be about as good as it gets. Adam Wainwright (0-0, -.– ERA) faces Clayton Kershaw (0-0, -.– ERA) in the first game of the NLDS. Wainwright finished the year with his second 20-win season and a 2.38 ERA, fifth best in the Majors. Kershaw lead the Majors in both ERA and wins (1.77 and 21 respectively), both career bests for him, despite missing the first month of the season.
The Skinny: Wainwright has a good postseason history against the Dodgers (2-0, 2.52 ERA), but Kershaw seems to be unstoppable this season. Additionally, I am sure Kershaw is looking to atone for his performance against St. Louis in game 6 of the NLCS last year when he gave up 7 earned runs in 4 innings, effectively punching the Cardinals’ ticket to the World Series. It will be exciting to see how the top 2 contenders for the NL Cy Young Award, 2 of the best pitchers of their generation, will pitch in this opening game of the Division Series.
