According to Thomas Swan of Rays Colored Glasses, rumor has it that a deal to send AL Cy Young winner David Price and second baseman/super-utility man Ben Zobrist to the Cards could be in the works. The Cards would have to give up Oscar Taveras, Marco Gonzalez, Tyler Lyons, and a couple of other low level prospects, but the potential reward has merit.
With Price, the Cards would bolster an ailing rotation and immediately upgrade to the best one-two punch in baseball with Price and Waino. Also, Zobrist could fill the hole at second, or his presence could allow Matt Carpenter to move back to second while Zobrist plays third. Both players fill immediate needs for the Cardinals and will elevate the Redbirds to the elite team in the Central.
While losing Taveras would certainly be a grievous loss for this Cardinals team, the system has many other young prospects currently blocked in the outfield. Also, there is never a shortage of inexpensive veteran outfielders on the free agent market, so any needs that may arise in the future could be filled from the outside.
Overall, I like this trade. It fulfills every current need for the Cardinals and elevates an already dominant pitching staff to historic heights. If the Rays are willing, I believe the Cards should bite on this deal before it is too late.
