Good Morning Cardinal Nation,

Here’s what I have for you this morning:

— The Milwaukee Brewers signedleft-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez to a one-year deal on Friday worth $2.25 million. In 47 appearances last season, he had a 3.03 ERA.

Mike Gonzalez, Who Will Be Pitching For The Milwaukee Brewers In 2013

Earlier in the off-season, the Cardinals signed Randy Choate to a three-year deal. Gonzalez is a bit younger, but arguably a bit more inconsistent. Before 2012, he had not posted an ERA under 4.00 since 2009.

Ken Rosenthal wrote a lengthy column on the controversial Hall of Fame nominees this year.

I think Rosenthal does a nice job of putting together all of the rational arguments. Some of them I agree with, others I don’t. I truly do not know what I would do if I could vote. I do think it’s unfair to keep players out of Cooperstown when cheating has been a facet of the game ever since the beginning (amphetamines, spitballs, among others). On the other hand, if we’re aware of it, why should we let it continue?

I strongly disagree with him on one count – I do think it’s preposterous to keep someone like Mike Piazza or Jeff Bagwell out simply because there have been extremely vague rumblings about them possibly using PEDs. To erase these guys’ accomplishments based on pure suspicion, to me, is extraordinarily unfair.

I’ll have more to say on this topic in the coming days…
