Well I couldn’t make up Cardinals news if I tried. Only stuff I have for you this morning Cardinal Nation are some thoughts I have on the Marc Rzepczynski signing:
Just so we’re all on the same page, Marc Rzepczynski, the sole left hander in the Cards’ bullpen for the majority of the 2012 season, avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $1.1 million one-year contract. He can make an additional $50,000 by appearing in 70 and 75 games ($25,000 for each). Rzepczynski, 27, went 1-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 70 games in 2012, making just over $500,000.
I think this was a very fair deal for both sides. I also think with the Randy Choate signing, there will be less pressure on him as he won’t be relied upon every single time we need an out against a solid right-handed hitter late in the game. I think Rzepczynski has shown signs of improving each year and I don’t think it’s crazy to expect him to have at least a semi-breakout year in 2013.
I am also told that David Freese and the team are making progress towards a deal, so hopefully that will get done soon, as the team has not gone to an arbitration hearing since 1999.
