Good Morning Cardinal Nation, here’s what’s going on today:
— Lance Berkman accepted an assistant coaching job at Rice University, where he was a two-time All American in the late 1990s. While he is unsure about whether or not he will play in 2013, it is unlikely that he will return to the Cardinals.
— The Cardinals have until the end of the month to agree on contracts with their five arbitration-eligible players. This list includes Jason Motte, Mitchell Boggs, Marc Rzepczynski, David Freese, and Edward Mujica. All are expected to return to the club in 2013, through one way or another. Mozeliak has said repeatedly that he plans to tender all five contracts.
— John Mozeliak has said a few notable things over the past couple days:
1. He is seeing progress with Rafael Furcal and his hopeful that he could be apart of the Cardinals roster in 2013.
2. They are in rush to hire a second hitting coach, as they are currently more focused on fixing up some of the holes in their roster as the Winter Meetings approach. First up? A left-handed reliever.
3. The Cardinals could also be looking for some depth up the middle as Furcal’s return is no guarantee whatsoever, and they are definitely in need of a shortstop should that be the case.
