Good Morning Cardinal Nation. Here’s what I have for you this morning:
Essentially, because of the new CBA, giving up draft picks is a little more expensive than it used to be. Goold does a very nice job of breaking it down, definitely worth reading if you are unaware of the details.
I have a certain amount of respect for Berkman that he says money is probably the biggest factor in whether or not he returns, as he admittedly says he would have a hard time making that type of money in any type profession. I do think it would be a little strange if, of all teams, he ends up with the Rangers, don’t you?
At the end of the day, it obviously did not seem to be quite as destructive a decision as we might have originally thought. There is no doubt that Albert is 100% an irreplaceable player, but you have to give John Mozeliak because he made it work. Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig had terrific seasons, and now they have all of that money that they would have spent on Pujols to, for starters, extend Adam Wainwright‘s contract. Pujols is one of the best hitters in baseball, and it’s still irritating to me that he’s not in that lineup every day, but in regards to making good baseball decisions, so far it seems to have worked out just fine.
