MOZELIAK, MATHENY EXTENSIONS: The Cardinals announced this morning that GM John Mozeliak will be given an extension on his contract thru 2016. In addition, the option will be picked up on Mike Matheny for the 2014 season. Mozeliak, who has been the GM since taking over for Walt Jocketty in 2007, had a three-year contract announced in 2010 that was going to expire at the end of this season. This is obviously great news all around. I got a chance to talk with Mozeliak a little bit during the Winter Warm-Up and he’s really just a great guy. He cares about the fans, and more importantly he cares about winning. Thankfully, he has proven himself to be pretty good at it. As for Matheny, I am hoping that this is a sign of better things to come for him. Particularly with his financial mess that was revealed earlier this offseason, I’m glad that the Cardinals and Matheny seem to have a mutual interest in continuing this relationship for a very long time. I’m not saying he’s going to be here for sixteen seasons like some other former manager, but given Matheny’s young age (42) and enthusiasm for the game, I think it’s safe to say that we will be seeing Matheny in that dugout for many years to come.
LOHSE EXPECTED TO SIGN SOON? Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports wrote in his column this morning that Kyle Lohse is expected to sign with a team very soon. Of course, he nor I have no idea which one. I wrote yesterday about how I think it will be the Milwaukee Brewers. Another friend of mine suggested that the San Diego Padres could be a good fit, but I don’t see them as an option if Lohse wants a multi-million, multi-year deal.
