Good Morning Cardinal Nation. Here’s what I have for you this morning:
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC: Earlier this morning, Derrick Goold wrote an articleabout different Cardinals, current and former, who are planning on participating in this year’s World Baseball Classic, which will take place from March 2-19. David Freese declined the chance to play for Team USA so he can be better prepared for Spring Training, saying:
“With the way the past two offseasons (shortened by the playoffs or recovering from surgery), I felt like the timing wasn’t right,” Freese explained. “I’m not sure if I would have been selected, but I wanted to really take this winter to regroup, recharge, and look toward the opportunity I’m going to have this spring with the Cardinals. I wanted to be sure I was refreshed and ready for that season.”
In regards to other Redbirds, Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina are slated to play for Puerto Rico and Jaime Garcia is expected to play for Team Mexico. Lastly, it was announced on MLB Network at 9AM Thursday morning that Mitchell Boggs will play for Team USA. I think he’s a great choice. He had that great stretch last season where he went 20.1 innings without giving up an earned run and he’s very good at coming into games, particularly with runners on base, and getting out of jams.
SPRING TRAINING PACKAGAES: The Cardinals are offering several Spring Training packages which are now available to purchase. I will be in Jupiter for a week during March and am very excited to cover the team from there. Spring Training is a great opportunity to really get up close with players and understand a lot of what goes on during their preparation for the season.
