One of the biggest questions going into the season is who will be starting at second base on opening day. Daniel Descalso, who ended the 2012 season as the starter, remains the favorite to win the job, with General Manager John Mozeliak declaring early in January that it is his “job to lose”.  However, one wildcard in the equation is Matt Carpenter, currently second on the depth chart behind Descalso. Carpenter has little experience at 2nd, playing sparingly at the position for the first time last season, but he has been drilling extensively this off-season at fielding and learning the intricacies of the position.
